The Director of Midwifery Practice, Education & Global Outreach (MPEGO) reports to the Chief Executive Officer. The Director will play a critical role in partnering with the senior leadership team in strategic decision-making and operations as ACNM continues to enhance its quality programming, meet member needs, and build the visibility and external engagement of ACNM.
This full-time (1.0 FTE) is based at the ACNM national office in Silver Spring, Maryland.
The position involves directing all activities of MPEGO, by performing the following duties personally or through subordinate employees and consultants:
Exercises leadership in the areas of midwifery practice, education and global outreach consistent with the strategic plan of the ACNM;
Leads and develops staff associated with these areas;
Coordinates activities of the department’s related volunteer infrastructure;
Develops, executes and manages grant resources in carrying out domestic and global work in midwifery;
Coordinates the availability of resources for member assistance and organization knowledge bases;
Oversees the operation of ACNM’s Continuing Education (CE) approval process.
The successful candidate will be a hands-on and participative manager with excellent communications skills and a deep knowledge of midwifery practice and challenges in the United States and globally.

Leads the midwifery practice, education and global outreach aspects of the ACNM.
Contributes substantially to the development, implementation, evaluation and revision of strategic plans and professional resources of the ACNM pertinent to midwifery practice, education and global outreach.
Develops and manages projects associated with activities funded by domestic grants to ACNM. Accountable to the CEO to ensure the effective and sustainable conduct of ACNM domestic grant funded activities, consistent and compliant with best practices, applicable laws and contract agreements with federally and privately funded prime contractors, staff and consultants.
Develops and manages personnel, including staff, consultants and volunteers, pertinent to the MPEGO Department.
Manages and prioritizes multiple concurrent projects and tasks.
Develops and implements budgets, including grant funding from federal and private sources.
Represents or directs the representation of ACNM before stakeholder organizations in midwifery and the health of women and newborns.
Searches for and develops grant opportunities appropriate to ACNM in global and domestic spheres.
Professional Practice Resources
Coordinates the availability of a variety of resources for individual members, including:
programs and services offering timely and accurate advocacy for and assistance with the practice of midwifery.
updates of professional practice resource materials in collaboration with the ACNM volunteer structure.
Global Outreach Activities
Provides general oversight to the strategy, management and execution of ACNM global outreach activities.
Accountable to the CEO to ensure the effective and sustainable conduct of ACNM global outreach activities, consistent and compliant with best practices, applicable laws and contract agreements with federally and privately funded prime contractors, staff and consultants.
Provides departmental resources to collect data and information about trends in graduate and health professional education useful for planning basic midwifery education, continuing professional development, and workforce development.
Oversees the administrative operations of ACNM’s Continuing Education (CE) approval process.
In partnership with various stakeholders, supports the quality of ACNM continuing education programs, continuous competency assessment programs, and other education-related initiatives which are primarily arranged through our ACNM Meetings staff, the ACNM Continuing Education Section of the Division of Education (DOE), and the American Midwifery Certification Board (AMCB).
Internal and External Knowledge and Information Resource
Monitors and reports key issues and trends related to midwifery practice, education and global issues and shares this knowledge throughout ACNM. Serves as a resource on research and data on priority professional practice and education issues and related national trends.
Oversees the professional content of publications and products produced by the ACNM national office (except the Journal of Midwifery and Women’s Health).
Assists ACNM advocacy, communications and marketing functions to ensure accurate and appropriate representation of midwifery in materials published for internal and external audiences.
Serves as liaison to the Board of Directors and selected Divisions and Committees focused on professional practice and education issues.
Directly supervise employees in the MPEGO department. Responsibilities include interviewing, hiring, and providing professional development opportunities, planning and allocating work assignments, and evaluating performance. Provide oversight of outsourced activities of the department.
Minimum 10 years relevant professional experience in Midwifery preferred. The ideal candidate will have leadership, management, professional advocacy and representation, communications, and clinical practice experience.
CNM or CM with Master’s degree required, doctoral preparation preferred.
Previous experience must demonstrate a commitment to women’s health and an ability to effectively present and advocate for midwifery and its interests before and within a variety of stakeholders.
Experience in project management and project planning is required.
Demonstrate strong skills in the following areas: analytical thinking, strong verbal and communications skills appropriate to a range of audiences.
Track record within ACNM as a Member Volunteer for committees, divisions, or within the local Affiliate desirable.
Previous experience with departmental budget development and tracking preferred.
Grant business development, writing and grant management experience is preferred.
Experience working effectively with volunteer leaders preferred.
Prior experience in supervision of staff members is preferred.
Strong interpersonal skills and demonstrated ability to work closely and collaboratively in a team environment is required.
Possesses qualities of integrity, credibility, and dedication to the mission of ACNM.
Ability to read, analyze, and interpret complex documents. Ability to respond effectively to the most sensitive inquiries or complaints. Ability to write white papers, articles, informational resources, speeches and other communications. Ability to make effective and persuasive speeches and presentations on controversial or complex topics to top management, public groups, and/or boards of directors.
Ability to read and interpret statistical analysis pertinent within professional literature. Ability to prepare project and department budgets and read financial reports related to the budget.
Ability to solve practical problems and deal with a variety of concrete and complex variables in situations where only limited standardization exists. Ability to interpret a variety of instructions furnished in written, oral, diagram, or schedule form.
CERTIFICATES, LICENSES, REGISTRATIONS
Certified nurse midwife (CNM) or certified midwife (CM) required.
OTHER SKILLS AND ABILITIES
Requires computer proficiency (Microsoft Office suite and common online group work and communications systems); moderate Excel proficiency preferred, oral and written communication skills; organization skills; and supervisory and leadership skills.
