Serves as manager of public relations and advisor to MUHC’s leadership in the planning and execution of public relations, media relations, crisis communications and internal communications initiatives across the MU Health enterprise including MUHC and the School of Medicine.
Build and maintain the reputation of MUHC and the SOM, lead the development of crisis communication for system leadership, expand the reach of internal and external communications and research from MUHC and the SOM to local, national and international audiences. Develop health system policies and procedures related to media relations; support the implementation and enforcement of administrative policies and procedures necessary to achieve the system’s mission and business goals; communicate approved policies and procedures to public relations staff and employees across MU Health. Develop messaging for health system leadership.
Manage the operations of Public Relations team, to include recruitment of staff, financial management, internal policy development and related issues. Develop communications and media relations materials and messages for MU Health to include media relations and internal communications deliver across multiple platforms. Ensure effective response to crisis situations (24-7 coverage)
Collaborate with the Chief Privacy Officer to ensure compliance with the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA) and Family Educational Rights and Privacy Act (FERPA) compliance in all aspects of media relations across MU Health and the MU School of Medicine. Collaborate with the University of Missouri System General Counsel’s Office to ensure compliance with media requests under Missouri’s Sunshine Law, Chapter 610 of the Revised Statutes of Missouri.
Monitor and adopt evolving trends and methods of public relations and employee communication, use measures to reflect effectiveness, ROI metrics. Maintain accessibility and visibility to MU Health leadership, MU Health Care employees, physicians and patients and School of Medicine faculty, staff, alumni and donors. Demonstrate strategic and critical thinking from the system perspective, such as to share information, negotiate and balance multiple organizational needs and priorities.
Prefer a minimum of three (3) years progressively responsible health care media relations and crisis communications experience, preferably in an academic medical center or large tertiary teaching hospital. Management experience in a health care setting preferred.
Requires a proven record of outstanding achievement in health care media relations. Must possess strong management, leadership and communications skills, and work well in a team environment requiring a high degree of creativity and motivation.
