The Nursing Informatics Specialist (NIS) role integrates nursing science, computer science and information science to manage and communicate data, information and knowledge. This position serves as a clinical informatics resource, in a liaison role between clinical end-users and information technology. The NIS contributes knowledge from a comprehensive understanding of nursing/clinical processes and practice standards, clinical informatics systems, patient flow, and operational processes to contribute to the use of data as a foundation for accurate, reliable and clinically meaningful measurements. The NIS provides expertise related to the use of "big data" for analysis and prediction, organizational and clinical integration, and interoperability, to improve costs, outcomes and quality. The NIS promotes the use of evidence-based clinical practice, and actively participates in initiatives related to the identification of emerging information technologies and applications, technological selection, implementation, adoption, optimization, data capture, and usage to support optimal clinical effectiveness and efficiency. Experience, skills, knowledge and required abilities: - Minimum of 5 years clinical and/or informatics background in an acute care setting. Previous experience with informatics (i.e., super user, testing, trainer)
- Experience with EPIC and working knowledge of EHR (clinical documentation, CPOE, BCMA)
- Excellent communication and presentation skills. Must be proficient in the English language (reading, writing, and speaking) and able to communicate effectively within all levels of the organization
- Good understanding of clinical workflows, documentation and technological integration
- Knowledgeable of regulatory and accreditation standards (CMS, TJC, MU)
- Competent user of Microsoft Office products – including Excel, PowerPoint, OneNote, and Visio.
- Understanding of database structure and principles of database management and data mining
- Excellent organization, facilitation, and leadership skills
- Attention to detail, able to: validate data and information for accuracy, relevancy, and timeliness.
- Must be service-oriented, with sensitivity to campus level/customer needs.
- Ability to incorporate LEAN methodology into daily practice
