The Short Stay RN is an RN who will utilize the nursing process and evidence-based practice in order to develop individual plans of care for Veterans in the Short Stay Unit. The RN is a key member of the multidisciplinary team. The RN is responsible for patient advocacy, collaboration, with other team members, promoting effective communication and ethical practice. The RN functions within their scope of practice to provide high quality direct patient care to patients such as medical/surgical type patients, pre-/post-operative surgical patients, Veterans receiving chemotherapy and radiation therapy, skilled rehabilitation, etc. The RN, in collaboration with the Veteran and family members, builds a care plan that meets the needs of the Veteran. Additional duties as assigned. Work Schedule: Six, 12 hour shifts / One, 8 hour shift per pay period 12 hour shift is 6:00 a.m. - 6:00 p.m. 8 hour shift is 6:00 a.m. - 2:00 p.m. or 2:00 p.m. - 10:00 p.m. or 10:00 p.m. - 6:00 a.m. Financial Disclosure Report: Not required. Physical Requirements: The population of male and female Veterans served ranges from the adult, age 18, to the elderly adult, age 65 and over. This position requires visual acuity, keen hearing, clear distinctive speech, manual dexterity, and the ability to communicate in English both verbally and in writing. This position requires potentially long periods of continued walking, standing, stooping, sitting, bending, pulling, pushing, and lifting 45 pounds or more. Transferring patients and/or objects may be required. The incumbent may be exposed to infectious processes, contaminated materials, chemical agents, and may be required to don protective clothing in isolation situations or operative/invasive procedures. The incumbent may occasionally be exposed to patients who are verbally abusive or physically combative secondary to medical and/or psychiatric illnesses, sometimes these Veterans exhibit unpredictable behaviors. The incumbent must be a mature, flexible, sensible individual capable of working effectively in stressful situations, able to shift priorities based on patient needs and exhibit proper time management.
