The Registered Nurse possess the knowledge and skills to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting, which will then enable effective implementation of health promotion and prevention practices, management of acute and chronic illnesses, and attainment of optimal levels of functioning. Major duties includes but are not limited to: Effectively utilizes the nursing process to provide care to patients Completes triage assessments, health risk assessments/screening; initiates follow-up as needed Assesses patient's learning needs; develops and implements a plan to meet needs and instruct patients and families in self-care and treatment measures. Modifies approach as indicated Applies collaborative team approach in identifying, analyzing and resolving patient care problems Promotes continuity of care through collaboration with the patient, family and healthcare team Refers patient for facility and/or community resources and case management as appropriate Administers prescribed therapies using appropriate judgment Initiates referrals to other disciplines and/or services as appropriate Accurately documents in the medical record patient findings, assessments, and are provided Effectively functions as the Charge Nurse, Team leader or other leadership role that guides sand directs others who provide patient care Applies problem-solving skills on the unit or Program level leading to an improvement in patient care Administers medication and treatments in accordance with established procedures/policy Applies a collaborative team approach in identifying, analyzing and resolving problems Practices in a non-judgmental, non-discriminatory manner and is sensitive to diversity Demonstrates knowledge and compliance of the Ethical Resolution process Acts as a patent advocate when patient self-determination is in question Serves as a resource and provides accurate information to patients and other staff when ethical issues arise Assumes responsibility/accountability for all professional decisions/actions Provides compassionate care, respecting patients' personal values and belief system Safeguards privacy and maintains confidentiality of all patient information including electronic and print Recognizes ethical problems and serves as a resource and/or consultant to patients, families or other health care providers Promotes medical center mission, vision and values; complies with EEO programs, partnership, customer service standards and VA policies and procedures Identifies and assesses resource utilization and safety issues, taking appropriate action Provides care, based on patient needs, that is delivered in a safe, efficient and cost-effective manner Effectively plans patient care and nursing resources for maximum productivity, efficiency and positive outcomes Establishes patient care priorities that ensure safe and effective patient care; effectively assigns staff to ensure efficient clinic flow Uses problem-solving techniques to optimize use of resources Provides leadership in responding to fire drills (REACT), tornados and disaster drills Applies appropriate infection control precautions Demonstrates leadership in following safe work practices, e.g., how to report a safety hazard, proper body mechanics, or use of personal protective equipment, etc. Other duties as assigned.
