The Durham VA Health Care System is seeking a well-qualified Registered Nurse to join the Post-Anesthesia Care Unit (PACU) team. The RN is responsible and accountable for the provision of direct patient care and for the delivery of quality nursing care to a culturally diverse veteran patient population. The RN must possess the knowledge and skills to effectively apply all aspects of the nursing process within a collaborative, interdisciplinary practice setting. The nursing role in the preoperative phase focuses on the physical, psychological, sociocultural, and spiritual preparation for the planned procedure/surgery. During postoperative Phase I, the RN's priority is assessment and performing basic life sustaining needs which require constant vigilance until Phase II has been reached. During Phase II, the RN role is to prepare the patient for care in the home or an extended care environment. The PACU Registered Nurse: Possess a high degree of professional and leadership skills, be organized and excel in problem solving, and have excellent verbal and written communication skills. Responsible for managing the care of patients recovering from various levels of sedation/anesthesia to include airway management, provision of physical and emotional maintenance, recovery, and discharge safety including documentation and communication of patient's status. Responsible for maintenance, care and use of equipment used; and applying principles of asepsis, therapeutic, and technical knowledge to ensure a safe environment for patients and staff. Responsible for all aspects of post-surgical/post anesthesia care which includes but is not limited to non-invasive/invasive hemodynamic monitoring; management of pain, N/V, surgical site evaluation for potential bleeding or other pathological indications, professional communication, assessing discharge criteria, and communication with families regarding patient status. Consistently documents nursing interventions and provides patient and family teaching.
