The Registered Nurse (RN) in Mental Health will provide nursing care to patients who present with the full range of Diagnostic Statistical Manual-IV (DSM-IV) mental disorders, including mood disorders, anxiety disorders, psychotic disorders, and substance use disorders, as well as coexisting medical/surgical conditions. Incumbent demonstrates nursing knowledge and clinical i skills with sound nursing judgment and the ability to care for patients. The incumbent will be able to assess and control the therapeutic milieu to achieve the optimal outcomes for patients. The incumbent will possess effective communication skills and customer service practices. Duties include, but not limited to the following: Utilizes critical thinking skills and clinical decisional authority, prioritizes patient care by assessing the needs of the unit/are as a whole and assigning staff appropriately. Performs initial and ongoing patient safety checks. Secures all contraband without injury to patient or staff. Assesses clinical data for neurological, cardiac/vascular, respiratory, gastrointestinal, genitourinary, and skin and documents findings and reports abnormalities. Incorporates assessment findings into treatment plan. Safely provides assessment and care for patients undergoing procedures, and treatments. Provides structure and maintains a therapeutic environment in collaboration with the client and other health care providers. Coordinates care with other health care provider in assessing, planning, implementing, and evaluating treatment interventions and in the transition from inpatient to outpatient settings through communication with outpatient clinics and programs..
